Sadly, I’m putting up for sale in my Posche 944 S2 finished
with Glacier metallic with a navy leather interior. It’s quite unusual colour
combination giving it a sophisticated look rather than showy and common red. I
owned it for the past 5 year and bought it with an intention of bringing it
back to its former glory. I decided to purchase this example as it has lots of
sougth after additions which makes it a real driver’s car. Being S2 it obviously
has 3.0 16V petrol engine with a manual transmission. It also has highly desirable
M030 pack so the same brakes and suspension as the turbo model. It’s been
fitted with a ProMax chip and has no catalytic converter; the power is around 240bhp.
This is my third 944 and it’s by far the fastest and the most responsive 944 I’ve
ever driven. Instantly reacts to the smallest touch of the accelerator pedal
regardless of what gear you in and what the revs are. It feels glued to the
road and the breaks are very good even for today’s standards. There is no turbo
lag or high running costs associated with the turbo model. An S2 in this
configuration is regarded by many as ‘the best 944 to have’.
The bodywork
It had a full respray just over 3 years ago and it’s a well-presented
car indeed. Inner and outer sills have been replaced and it has a thick clear
coat so the gloss will last. The car has been driven, so it has (not many)
stone chips and a couple of minor scratches, I noticed one small blemish about 5mm,
so please don’t expect a new car but a very nicely presented classic. Last
spring the floor was cleaned and protected underneath. To make it stand out I’d
recommend painting the window frames and replacing the passenger window seal or
at least trims as the seal doesn’t sit properly. Also, one fog light is
cracked. The callipers are painted in blue which works well with the bodywork
colour. I was planning to paint D90 wheels in the original colour but they are
still in nice condition with minimal wear and the matching set or Michelin
Performance Grip tyres have plenty of tread left.
The interior
The interior is a nice place to be. Last spring both front
seats have been reconditioned and are like new with original blue piping and perforated
leather. When the seats were out, I had all carpets and the genuine mats
professionally washed. It smells nice and fresh. Most recently I had the rear inner
roof panel retrimmed in genuine colour. I just got it back and it looks like
new. I’ll put it back it the time allows, if not I’ll leave it to the new owner.
The original clock works and surprisingly the LCD display isn’t damaged. The only
bad things I can think off are common cracks to the dashboard (not too bad and
not offensive from the driver’s seat) and the glove compartment hinges are
broken, there are holes to the trim next to the passenger knees and the steering
wheel would need to be retrimmed, but I was planning to put a 3 spoke steering when
from the 968. Also, the carpet popped out in couple of places due to heavy
hoovering after the wash.
The mechanics
The 944 drives great, with no unwanted noises from the
suspension, stick well to the road and the corners are addictive, whether it’s a
twisty B road, faster A road or a motorway. The engine is strong and has more than
enough power to enjoy this transaxle layout with the 50-50 weight distribution
ratio. The PowerMax chip is a real gem and transform the engine into something
else giving it lots of torque in lower reeves and the feeling it can revs lot
more. In reality, it doesn’t need that much revving having the power accessible
much earlier than standard. The breaks are sharp and there is plenty clutch
left. The timing belts and all rollers have been replaced in April 23 using a
timing belt kit imported from Germany. At the same time, it also had oil (Mobil
1), oil filter and coolant replaced and a new battery fitted, all at 144500. The
timing belt will need adjusting at about 147k as the new timing belt does on
these cars. When I got the car, it had a Jetex back box fitted which gave it a
nice growl. A couple year ago the middle section started to blow next to the
original catalytic converter and after talking to a garage they recommended to replace
it with a stainless steel pipe as there is no requirement to for a catalytic
converter as the car is 1990. It definitely improved the torque curve and added
some power, but now with the Jetex back box it’s a bit too loud for my liking. It’s
okay after it warms up and not bad on a longer journey, but I was looking to
put a genuine back box on the car after talking to other 944 owners who had their
cat removed. It comes with a massive folder full of invoices.
I didn’t drive the car much, but the last year I went for a
road trip to Germany and back and it’s been absolutely faultless brining lots
on smile on my face and other drivers on the road who very soon had a chance to
admire this lovely curved glass and the rear spoiler.
It’s very comfortable
even with the current exhaust and race set up of the car. This is not
immaculate car, it would suit an enthusiast who doesn’t mind spend a sunny
weekend on sorting few small things I mentioned earlier while the most expensive
bits have been done. Please don’t confuse this car with covered in moss examples
who spend years is storage or amateur racer owned 944 serviced on a driveway.
I’ve been very honest
with the description as I’m a mature car enthusiast who loves 80s and 90s
sports cars. I’ve been critical and I don’t like to be disappointed when buying
a classic car online. I’m only selling it as I’m moving soon and have other
cars to take with me, so sadly one has to go. I know I’ll regret it as the
driving experience is something you won’t find elsewise at this price point.
Good 944 don’t come out for sale often as the prices will go up significantly
soon, so it might be one of the last chances to get this gem of a car for a sensible
money. I’ve set a very realistic reserve below 5digit figure.
2 keys + a service key and Clifford alarm fitted. V5C in my
name.
