In 2024, Handball is represented on Coins. Handball has its origins at the end of the 19th century, in the Scandinavian countries as well as in Germany, where at that time, handball on grass also became a recognized sport. The two versions of the sport coexisted until 1966, before the indoor version was preferred to its grass counterpart.
At the Olympic Games, handball was introduced for the first time at the Berlin Games in 1936, in its grass version, and was then played as a demonstration sport at the 1952 Games in Helsinki. It reappeared on the Olympic program twenty years later at the Munich Games in 1972, this time in its indoor format.
