1987 Pontiac Fiero

The Pontiac Fiero is a mid-engine sports car that was built by American automobile manufacturer General Motors from 1983 to 1988 for the 1984 to 1988 model years. The Fiero was designed by George Milidrag and Hulki Aldikacti as a sports car. It was the first two-seater Pontiac since the 1926 to 1938 coupes and the first mass-produced mid-engine sports car by an American manufacturer. Many technologies incorporated in the Fiero design, such as composite panels, were radical for their time.

When is the last time you saw an almost brand new 1987 model year car from any manufacturer? Well, here in our Hallowed Halls of the Classic Auto Mall we live by the mantra of "you never know what's going to come through the door next", and we certainly weren't disappointed to have this nearly new 2-seater roll into our halls. For consignment, a time capsule in the form of a 1987 Pontiac Fiero. This car was handed over to a technical school in 1987 and remained there as a training model until being first registered in Texas in 2015. During that time it accrued a mere 841 miles and is now ready to bestow itself in your driveway ready for you to take it for a spin!

Exterior
This low, 2 door, mid-engine sports car basically uses three kinds of plastic: reaction-injection-molded (RIM) polyurethane, a "soft" plastic designed to take knocks on the front and rear bumpers; reinforced-reaction-injection-molded (RRIM) polyurethane, a harder, but still supple plastic used on the sides and doors of the Fiero. This car's panels are bathed in white and is a respray which is noted due to sanding marks and inclusions in the finish. There are a few areas of chipping, but overall, the body panels are straight with well minded gaps as this is a no hit car. Black accenting is seen with a wrap around the total car trimming just below the belt line and corresponding top to meet the mid-section of the front grille. A black rocker trim in plastic, black glass surrounds, and a black vent for the rear quarter helps gather up extra air for the mid-engine. On the back, a body width flush mount egg crate style tail and reverse light panel stretches from rear quarter panel to rear quarter panel. 14-inch standard alloy wheels are on this example, and these are wrapped in black wall rubber.

Interior
We swing the doors and see the 2 buckets covered in light gray broadcloth for the inserts and heavily padded bolsters. A darker gray vinyl makes up the lower seat sides and all appear as new. A large wide center console is between the buckets and houses a large storage compartment, the shift lever and dual ashtrays. Taking the square and rectangle design motif to the max, the dash is made up of a series of squares and rectangles in black with the instruments inserted into a brushed silver bezel and other controls. A surrounding dark gray dash front within which are these protruding shapes. Carrying this idea to the edges where the A/C and heat vents are also on their own vertical blocks on either side. Door panels are a mix of gray plastic with black fields and gray carpeted lower coverings. Very clean like new carpeting floods the floors, and above is a fuzzy headliner which remains tight along with a small overhead console for the courtesy lamps.

Drivetrain
The 2.5-liter four cylinder "Iron Duke" engine is inserted in the mid-section directly behind the seats. It is very clean, all original and is fed via EFI. A TH125 3-speed automatic is within this area as well and throws power to the rear wheels via a 2.84 final drive.

Undercarriage
4 wheel independent suspension, and 4 wheel power disc braking attach themselves to a clean rust free unibody which has black rust free rockers and floor pans. Pretty much a ground effects bottom with simple attachments and smooth metal abounding. Also noted, no runs or drips from the engine's bottom end...AMAZING!

Drive-Ability
I slipped into the firm but comfortable and supple broadcloth seats, and turned the key for an immediate fire up. On the test track it handles nicely and runs smoothly. Looking much like an Italian sports car, it is really a gas saving commuter, so power is lower as your sacrifice on this 4-cylinder version. All was working in the functionality department, and thanks to a recent AC servicing I remained icy cool all the while looking nice and hot.

This one owner, 1st registered in 2015, amazingly low original mile car has been completely gone over and ready to enjoy. All looking nearly factory new and having help from the minds and skillsets of the up-and-coming mechanics and autobody specialists over the years. Pontiac may have built the excitement, but it's going to take you to fully enjoy it!
