1982 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

For consignment, a rare piece of SCCA racing history now gracing our ever changing Hallowed Hall inventory.  This 1982 Camaro Z28 was initially raced under the Guildstrand Engineering banner in 1982 having finished 2nd in the prototype class at the Longest Day Of Nelson in 1982, then following up that podium the next year with a full on win at the same race.  From there it was passed onto Square A Automobile Sales & Service of Bethlehem, PA where it was raced in a SS/GT class by Bertil Roos, a former Formula One driver, at the Pocono Double National race.  This race caused some issues for Roos and the car owners as the car was found to not be legal for its' class due to being updated with a 1983 5-speed manual transmission as well as a dual snorkel air cleaner and some illegal gauges.  This matter was protested and the car was allowed to race, but to no avail Paul Tosi pulled off the win.  From there the car competed in a host of other races and even has had some celebrity drivers including James Brolin, Rick Mancuso and John Greenwood just to name a few.  A mere 10,133 original documented miles are on the clock, and this car looks and feels all the part.  1982 was the only 3rd generation year offering a black interior option, and this car took it!  A slightly worked engine, a roll cage and some suspension upgrades are all on, however the looks remain, and for the taking, and your storing, showing or driving around it is like new in all aspects.

Exterior
NIcely aligned body panels bathed in Bright Red still retaining its shine show off for the eye all around this car.  Just above the rockers, a dual red striped band encircling the entire car and accentuating it perfectly.   And for more highlighting just below this red is some silver not to be out done, it is wider and wraps the entire bottom of this car.  Within this strip are some red 3D Z28 badges in the front quarter just in case you forgot what you are driving!  Neoprene front crash bumpers are nearly perfect and have dual rectangular headlights deeply inserted within.   The door handles, sport mirrors on either side, and black trimmings for the window surrounds denote the impending doom about to befall any challenger.  Race livery is noted throughout the body along with driver names and the car number.  A nicely and gracefully sloping rear greenhouse glass takes our eye to the rear spoiler and taillight section, which is mounted in an inverted V and iconic look for the Z28's.  15-inch 5 spoke wheels are all around and wrapped in deeply treaded blackwall rubber.

Interior
Black vinyl perfectly aligned covers the door panels with a swing of them.  Inside gray tweed broadcloth inserts yield to black smooth velour surrounds and create the classy yet sporty look for these front  buckets sans headrests in this model's interior.  Dueling buckets you may say, as these are also in the back of the car, in low back form, offering up plenty of room if you can manage to climb past the multi-point roll cage.  Black carpeting is flooding the floors and is pristine.  Above floats the dash with its simple design and round black bezel gauges in front of the original steering wheel.  The center and passenger side is all smooth, clean black molded vinyl and plastic.  Just below the dash in the car center, is the beginnings of the console with temp sliders, a radio delete panel and an ashtray, (hey a fella has to smoke while slicing and dicing around the track).  Moving further down we meet the console that is holding the shifter for the 5-speed manual transmission, storage compartment and a quartz clock, all very clean with not even a hint of dust.  A tight black headliner is above and is heavily sagged but held in place by the top bars of the roll cage.

Drivetrain
A shiny, nicely presenting and condition 305ci V8 fits snugly into the engine bay.  According to the Guildstrand preparation list this mill retains the factory bore and stroke with a 9.0-1 compression ratio, low friction oil pump, windage tray baffle, and makes an estimated 225hp.  A single 4-barrel carburetor is atop of the blue block feeding just the right amount of air and fossils.  A 1983 spec T5 5-speed manual transmission is on back.  For the rear gears we note a 10-bolt pumpkin, with a 3.08 ratio and Positraction.

Undercarriage
You can say a thing of beauty with a light spattering of historical patina and road/track dirt.  I can see a mix of black paint, some surface rust on the untreated components and a few spots of the factory Bright Red peeking through.  All remains structurally solid including the tubs, rockers, fuel tank and other underpinnings.  All factory pressed steel and all very clean.  Independent coil springs for the front, and a torque arm for the rear with Delco shocks all the way around and a stiffened torque arm mount.  Power disc brakes are noted all around as well and 1983 high flow Z28 exhaust is on for the big racy exhale.

Drive-Ability
Due to the low mileage and wanting to keep it that way, we limited our drive to just the basics,  Yes it started right up, idled smoothly and drove very nicely.  All functions were working perfectly, and on my single trip around our well hidden test track I had visions of SVO Mustangs and Porsche 944s hunting me down.

Low Low mileage is always a good thing on a classic car such as this 1982 Z28 and some serious history in the racing department make for a real investment grade shower and goer.  All is well in bowtie land, and we have a must see classic in our halls that harkens right back to 1982.
