[published date: 1762]. Rare First Edition. 8vo. 8" x 5.5" inches (LxB).
Pp. [ii], xxiv, 196, 12, (iv) of subscribers pages, with numerous
engraved in-text illustrations, includes a part of 1 foldout copper
engraved map. Fine original calf leather binding, spine with 5 raised
bands, hinges cracked but strings holding. Lacks frontispiece & 1 part
of the 3 fold plan of York. The Gent illustration mounted on page 70 has
been removed. Many wood cuts throughout the text. Text block trimmed
occasionally affecting the text. Scarce in any condition, and a work for
which there is no standard collation as the printer often inserted extra
material at will. The final 24pp tract is not noted as an integral part
of this book in ESTC, which records it as a separately published work
(t026488). Gent, eccentric as ever, however kept tinkering with this
arrangement, and copies display a variety of placements of these
woodcuts. ESTC T172477 also notes a 1767 " reissue of the 1762 edition
(ESTC T26494) with the title page reset, and without the engraved 'Plan
of the city of York' and single sheet advertisement for Gent's 'Pious
contemplations', 1757, inserted.
Not one copy listed online.
Extremely rare. Absolutely spectacular.
A classic work, complete as
issued.

CONDITION
REPORT: A
rare book in the original calf leather binding,heavy wear tear scuffing
chipping, pages
with age
toning soiling, are generally clean & bright (See Scans below), the
hinges are split & visible from the outside, the binding
is a bit loose & barely intact. The leather is smooth & supple
to the touch.
