VINTAGE 1981 Hand-Drawn WATERCOLOR Sheep PA Folk Art Artisan PJ RANKIN HULTS

We recently found this folksy hand painted sheep form P. J. Rankin Hults which was done in 1981 and signed by her in the bottom right hand corner.  Since 1979, PJ Rankin-Hults, a Lancaster, Pennsylvania-based artist and designer, has produced original folk paper cuttings. They are a blend of the Pennsylvania German folk arts of Fraktur and Scherenschnitte, with a bit of whimsey. It is framed in a folk art painted sponged wooden frame also most likely made by Pam.

This one is an early in her career (1981) folksy -folk art watercolor of a whimsical white sheep decorated with green grass and a nicely whimsical border with hearts and a folksy blue triangular border on the top and bottom . It has a wonderful sponge or grain painted frame surrounding it.  It is very naive and primitively done.

She is also known for fraktur and paper cuttings.  Fraktur are ornamental, hand-drawn and hand-colored calligraphic pieces executed as family records and educational pieces. They feature flowers and birds with a simple warm palette of colors. Scherenschnitte are paper cuttings with wonderful graphic elements.

Pam is thankful to her family for their continued encouragement and support, and to God for being given the time, talent and inspiration.

The hand-painted sponged frame is very nice and measures approx 9" X 7" and the insert or sight area of painting measures approx 6.5" X 4.5".

Her original folk paper cuttings can always be found at Maple Croft Interiors, established in 1982 by Pam and her mother, Ruth.

Live well, laugh often, love much.

Thanks so much for looking!
