For consignment, a "retro rod" similar to an aftermarket hot rod body being built from the ground up with all the trimmings, only this one comes to us directly from a factory with a host of consignor added custom touches. With a total of 607 total Prowler Yellow examples built for the model year, (563 US production, 23 built for Canada and 21 test units built), this rare example is sporting only a mere 8,267 title verified actual miles. A turn key show car that garnishes a second look wherever it goes, this car has custom fabricated, not a kit, lamborghini style doors, all new emissions equipment, a chrome and stainless dressed engine compartment, some underbody lighting, and an added wind jammer. 1999 never looked so good!
Exterior
Whilst using predominantly aluminum panels and adhesive to blend them together, this Prowler is in excellent condition with no rust or fillers. The panels were then coated in PY3 which translates to Prowler Yellow which is in the deep end of the pool and nearly flawless. With its Indy style front wheels and suspension with added floating fenders that magically turn with the wheels, to its modern yet retro stylings, chopped drop top in black canvas, and curved back trunk, you are in 1932/1999 wonderland! Sporting Prowler Yellow front bumpers engineered to float yet absorb a 5mph crash, they are a wonder of engineering. A custom add on for the body are fabricated Lamborghini style doors that open normally just a bit, but then lift upward. You can't go wrong with this look on an already very custom looking car. The factory silver finish 5 spoke alloy wheels in 17 and 20-inch form are on the corners and are wrapped in the factory original tires that spec out at 225/45R17 for the front and 295/40R20's in the rear. Drop the handkerchief doll baby.
Interior
Black leather abounds with the buckets sitting proudly and in near showroom condition. These flank a center console which houses a glovebox, cupholder, and Autostick, (a shift mounted version of the Tiptronic gear shift). Keeping in tune with other earlier rods, this has a center elongated Prowler Yellow painted oval which houses the instruments. A/C, power windows, power locks, and the factory AM/FM/Cassette sound system are seen on the dash as well. Above the steering column is a tachometer and the seats have a built-in roll bar for extra safety in case you find yourself with wheels up...literally! A Prowler badged wind jammer is now residing behind the seats so you can enjoy the tunes from the stereo or a conversation with your passenger.
Drivetrain
New for the 1999 model year is the 253hp 3.5 Liter V6 to power this light and nimble car, and is fuel injected. This is attached to a 4-speed automatic "auto-stick" with the above noted tiptronic auto gear shift actuated gearbox. A 3.89 rear axle allows you to cruise at low RPM and yet have fun when the pedal hits the metal. All is looking just fine under this retro styled hood with a mix of polished covers and expanded stainless steel gracing the engine bay and things are polished to the nines, so much so that I was able to shave in the reflection. It has an aluminum block with a forged steel crank bedded in the four main bearings. The heads and pistons are aluminum as well.
Undercarriage
As expected, nothing of notability, just very slight low mileage wear and tear, but it is really at a minimum. 4-wheel power disc brakes with ceramic pads are seen, and all else is structurally sound with the all-wheel independent coil over suspension. The factory dual exhaust is still in place and we note some underbody LED lighting has been added in to really WOW! them at the shows. These lights also appear in the grille as well.
Drive-Ability
My climb in and test drive revealed that there are still fun cars to drive that are out there that do not need hours of tinkering prior to doing so. This car had excellent pickup and ran smoothly. It's definitely a head turner, and not something you see every day, even at Classic Auto Mall where we see quite a lot, and this car fits right in, and right out of the early year, (sic), of 1999.
A retro throwback with all the modern conveniences, some custom touches, and a convertible. For the modern day hot rodder without all the wrenching. A factory chopped topper, moving front fenders, Indy style front suspension, blingy engine bay, and wild head lighting pull up to the drive in in this classic new car from Chrysler.
