Sanzo Wada (1883–1967)'s interest in the importance of color prompted him to find
the Japan Standard Color Association (present-day Japan Color Research Institute) in 1927.
Active not only as a color researcher but also as an artist, fashion designer,
and stage and film art director, he received the 1954 Academy Award for Best Costume Design for Gate of
Hell was recognized as a Person of Cultural Merit by the Japanese government in 1958.

About the Author
Sanzo Wada
In the early Showa period, he focused on the importance of color and established the Japan Standard Color Association (now the Japan Color Research Institute), leaving a significant mark on color research.
Known as a Western-style painter, he is active in a wide range of fields, including film, stage art, and fashion design.
In 1954, he won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for "Gate of Hell." He is a Person of Cultural Merit.
