History of T-Shirt Creation
In the 1980s six New York friends Avram Finkelstein, Brian Howard, Oliver Johnston (1952–1990), Charles Kreloff, Chris Lione, and Jorge Soccarás. who were seeking a visual to express their anger at the government's silence around the AIDS epidemic (and rouse elected officials to do something about it).
These six men created the Silence=Death poster using the title phrase and a pink triangle, known from its association with the persecution of homosexuals in Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. The first printing of the poster contained several errors in the smaller text at the bottom. Later the Pink Triangle Created was incorporated in 1986 to a poster and t-shirt.
Their anger and rage was directed at the Reagan administration; the president remained largely silent about the epidemic until 1987 when he declared AIDS “public health enemy number one.” The SILENCE=DEATH emblem, adopted that same year by the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP).
