This chuval was made in
the Kahraman Maras area of southeastern Turkey ca 1910. It is 100% wool, it
measures 2’ 2” X 3’ 2” and it is in very good condition. A total of ten hexagon
medallions are displayed in two vertical rows. A narrow band of red plain weave
between the rows and a guard band with a “twisted rope” design on each side of
the main field separates it from the undecorated plain weave body. The sides
and back of the bag are done in vertical bands of plain blue, red, and green.
The weaver had access to an extensive palette and used red, indigo, light blue,
yellow, green, black, gray, and white for her main design. She also used
metallic yarn sparingly to add sparkling highlights throughout the design.
There might be some color fading, but if so, it’s slight. All reasonable offers wll be considered.
