THE WATCH

Here we have a 2013 Aquadive Bathyscaphe 300N Black DLC Automatic Limited to 500 pieces with a 47mm Tonneau-shaped stainless steel case coated in black DLC (Diamond Like Carbon), named after the self-propelled deep-sea submersible "Bathyscaphe" which in 1960 reached the deepest part of the Mariana Trench "Challenger Deep" in the Pacific Ocean at 10,911m or 35,798ft. The case is a 1/1 reproduction of the 1970 “Model 50”  and has been CNC milled from a solid block of stainless steel, its chamfered edges lead to a lug-to-lug length of 52.5mm and a case thickness of 19.5mm giving the watch a impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a 7mm signed screw-down crown, and between the bottom lugs, we have an automatic HEV, Helium Escape Valve. The unidirectional 120-click black DLC-coated stainless steel bezel has deep knurling for extra grip and a black ceramic dive insert with white printed numerals and markings, highlighting Dive time. A flat 5mm thick sapphire crystal is AR coated sitting above a black galvanised dial. An outer minute track has baton and trapezoid indexes coated in C3 SuperLumiNova marking the hours. At 3 o’clock a colour-matched date window. Skeletonised hour hand chromed alongside an orange and chrome minute hand filled with SuperLumiNova are complemented by an orange-tipped sweeping second hand. Text at 12 o’clock has the Aquadive motif and at 6 o’clock Bathyscaphe 300, 3000m/9900ft. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the details of the watch engraved, its number out of 500 and the Aquadive logo in the centre. Inside an automatic ETA Cal. 2824-2, 25 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, the movement has hand winding and hacking seconds for your convenience. The watch comes paired with its original 24mm ISOfrane rubber dive strap and comes with its Aquadive box, CD and papers.

PERSONAL NOTE

Aquadive is a brand with undeniable history and pedigree within the diving world and this Bathyscaphe 300N Black DLC 47mm is a testament to those achievements boasting 3000 meters of water resistance! This is the watch for a hardcore diving aficionado or someone who loves larger watches.

THE BRAND

Aquadive was founded in the 1960s at the height of sports diving. Their watches were sold next to the dive suits and proved popular and were also worn by Mercury astronaut and US Navy SEALAB aquanaut, Scott Carpenter. In 1970 they introduced the Time-Depth “Model 50” at 47mm, 20mm thick it was a huge watch of its day and still would be today! An Oil-filled depth gauge was incorporated and a Dynatron electronic movement was used which was cutting-edge at that time. Sadly during the 1970s and 1980s “quartz revolution”, the brand closed down. But in 2011 Rick Marei, an avid dive watch collector revived the brand. They are now part of the SYNCHRON Group which also owns ISOfrane and Tropic strap brands.
