NETFLIX Official Series Prequel:
- Masters of The Universe: Revelation (2021)
A follow-up or sequel to the original Filmation animated series He-Man and The Masters of The Universe (1983-1985) that was based on the line of action figures from Mattel Toys, MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE: REVELATION was announced in 2019 as being an adult-oriented anime inspired series in development by Netflix. Much like the 2024 sequel series X-Men '97 on Disney+, Netflix's Revelation would begin as if it were the next episode of the original series t hat ended in '85, with the over-arching goal of tying up lingering story and character threads while adding to the Masters of the Universe mythology on entirely new levels.
Under the direction of showrunner and writer KEVIN SMITH, Revelation debuted its first five episodes on Netflix in July 2021 and delivered another five in November 2021 to complete the series. But the continuation of the new Masters of The Universe saga wasn't yet done, as Netflix continued the saga from Revelation with a third set of five new episodes n Masters of the Universe: Revolution in January, 2024.
Devoted fans, however, know that the 15 animated episodes aired to date aren't all there is to the tale of Revelation.
An official prequel to the first episode of Revelation, in the form a four-issue limited series from Dark Horse Comics and Mattel and overseen by Kevin Smith, premiered just ahead of the show's Netflix debut in July 2021. Also titled Masters of the Universe: Revelation, the prequel series follows HE-MAN who, following a vicious ORLAX attack on his father KING RANDOR, learns that the creature is linked to the origin of the sword of power. To save Randor and put an end to the chaos, He-Man embarks on an epic journey that pits him against his longtime foes SKELETOR and EVIL-LYN, and sees TEELA take the reins of a powerful legacy.
