Argonne Labs Dept of Energy University of Chicago EBR-II Nuclear Reactor
Commemorative Coin Rare Piece!
This Rare brass coin will be a fantastic addition to your collection!
This highly detailed double side coin commemorates 20 years of successful
operation of the EBR-II.
The coin may have been given to select staff members associated with the
project, I have found no information regarding this coin and have been unable
to find any other examples of it.
The lettering is done in raised relief on both sides, it feels heavy in
hand and is 2” in diameter x 1/8” thick. There appears to be a bit of patina on
the coin that could be cleaned or polished if desired.
A bit of history....
The EBR-II was a collaborative effort by the U.S. Department of Energy, the
University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory.
The Experimental Breeder Reactor-II (EBR-II) was a sodium-cooled fast
reactor designed, built and operated by Argonne National Laboratory at the
National Reactor Testing Station in Idaho in 1964.
The original emphasis in the design and operation of EBR-II was to
demonstrate a complete breeder-reactor power plant with on-site reprocessing of
solid metallic fuel, later it was used to test Integral Fast Reactor concepts.
In 1986 the EBR-II underwent an experimental shutdown simulating a complete
cooling pump failure that demonstrated its ability to self-cool its fuel
through natural convection of the sodium coolant during the Decay Heat period.
