Childs Stick Spatter Stencil

Miniature Toy Plate

DOG & ANIMALS ~ ANIMAUX

Creil-Montereau Faience, France c.1910

This is a stunning toy sponged stencil decorated plate, originally part of a complete miniature children's dinner service. The measures a diminutive 4 inches in diameter with a scalloped rim.

The center of the plate features a dog sitting eagerly in front of his food bowl. The image is stenciled in bright lime green, surrounded by a bright cobalt blue stencil pattern consisting of alternating lion and camel images around the rim.

The pattern name is "Animaux" ( Animals ).

The piece was made by one of the faienceries in the North of France, probably Creil-Montereau. The plate is marked only with an impressed mark that reads I 4, probably an indicator of shape and piece number.

The plate is in great condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people collect it...not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considered disposable. The images are not aligned neatly, there are nicks and runny glaze and little bumps and dips and transfer wrinkles and glazed over edge frits original to the making. The naïve and hasty style adds to the folksy charm.

Light overall crazing consistent with age. Kiln kiss original to the making. This little plate was impeccably potted and the stencil was applied with a good deal of attention to detail.

Children's spongeware and stencil spatter ware of this quality is quite scarce and highly sought after. The image of the dog contrasted with the wild animals is simply delightful. The plate will make a great addition to your collection of children's dishes.
