What Causes Gray Hair?
All people are born with a genetic determination for the color of their hair. While this color may not be readily apparent at birth, by one to two years of age, hair color is set. For many people, this color lasts for about 40 years. As people age, they can lose the pigmentation in their hair, causing it to grow out gray or, sometimes, white. One of the first signs that we may be getting older is that our hair slowly starts to turn gray. The melanocyte is the cell in the skin and hair that produces and maintains the pigment melanin. There are three basic types of melanin: eumelanin, pheomelanin, and euromelanin. Eumelanin normally has the dark or dark brown color that becomes the color of the hair. Pheomelanin has reddish-yellow color, and it helps in the production of keratin (protein) in keratinocytes cells of the hair.
