Additional Information

Prolific author, philosopher, occultist, and spiritualist Aleister Crowley is pictured here in 1934 during a period following the development of the bulk of his body of work and a time when he was associating with some of the great literary minds of the time, including Aldous Huxley. Crowley's work was highly influenced by various religions, including witchcraft and other fringe beliefs, which led to him influencing later cultural movements that would transform Western society during the twentieth century as traditional religious beliefs came under scrutiny and new values were being adopted by counter-culture groups.

Crowley was born into a wealthy family in the nineteenth century and was raised in the fundamentalist Christian Plymouth Brethren branch of Christianity, though he began to question this at an early age, instead preferring to study and practice Western Esotericism. Crowley was also a mountaineer who traveled extensively during his life to summit some of the world's most challenging peaks. Crowley's interest in mysticism and esoteric teachings led to him founding several organizations and publishing numerous books regarding these practices, including his work with alchemy. His synthesis of Eastern and Western philosophies is the most noted aspect of his literary and philosophical style.

This iconic photograph of Crowley remains one of the most enduring tributes to his legacy and contributions to esoteric thought. The distinctive aesthetic and period immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating a genuine bond between the past and present, illustrating Crowley's influence on culture in the twentieth century.
