A very rare fold out map of the colony of Victoria from 1868, published by Collins, and stamped with the stamp of its original retailer "The City Cycle Agency, Collingwood, Victoria."
Bound in green cloth and stamped in gold on the front cover "Collins Map of Victoria". Inside it says "Collins Colonial Series."
The map is cloth-backed paper. There is hand stitched red binding around the map edges.
Map details districts and places of Victoria, as they were known as that time. I think some of the district names have since changed.
Information at the top of the map details facts about Victoria in the years 1867-8, and refers to the goldfields in the present tense, as an ongoing phenomenon of that time - even noting the number of Chinese miners present in the goldfields.
A world map is inlaid at the bottom and appears to show shipping routes to Australia of this period.
The name of J Bartholomew FRGS is printed on the bottom - I am guessing he was the cartographer.
The map belonged to an ancestor of mine, Professor AJ Abbott, and it shows some water damage on the back from a fire he had in his office, which damaged a lot of his books. But the front map section looks very good. On some of the joints/folds the paper has split along the fold lines, but is still securely adhered to the backing cloth. There are some light discoloration spots, as you might expect from a map of this age and type. The green cloth cover shows some wear, consistent with age and history. This is a remarkable artifact from the early decades of the colony of Victoria.
