A very tough-to-find, Rubber Standard Handmade Reel was the second reel designed and produced by Shakespeare circa the early 1900s. The patent was issued November 12, 1901. This reel is made of jet-black hard rubber with decorated turned pillars and silver-plated end plates. This "Quadruple" reel features a thumb-controlled slide click and is also marked "Handmade".

The reel is 2 ¼ inches in diameter, 1 5/16 inch pillars.  This reel winds easily, and has a strong working rim click and adjustable bearing caps. It does have some condition issues: shows extensive brassing, the foot has been soldered onto foot pillars with some manicuring of the solder taking place and visible where pillars attach to the foot and on the bottom of the foot. There is a crack and chip on the bottom of the rubber tail plate and a visible rubber repair on the head plate where it meets the foot pillars, all shown in the photographs.  Even with its condition issues, it displays well and its historical significance would make it a great addition to any reel collection.
