From our personal collection we are pleased to offer this art nouveau period copper coal box.  The pice was made by Joseph Sankey and Sons a company well known by the initials "JS&S."  In the early 1900s they were a producer of household goods, notably jugs and pitchers, in brass and copper along with items such as coal scuttles and boxes like this one.  They became well known for their adoption of the art nouveau style and use of it on may of their household items.  The pattern on this coal box is known as "Honeysuckle."

The coal box does have a registration number but does not have the JS&S mark.  This is apparently to be expected as the one shown in the original catalog (model 1238) was also apparently unmarked.

The exterior comprises sheets of hammered copper with the honeysuckle motif.  It opens up to reveal a tin or zinc liner that was removable, as shown, and actually used to hold the coal or kindling (the use we made of it).  It is in excellent condition especially considering it is likely well over 100 years old.  A fine addition to any art nouveau collection or just something to give your fireplace a touch of extra ambience.

It is quite heavy and accordingly we will need to charge $100 for shipping in the US.

The photos form part of the description so please look at them carefully.
