Your bid is for a BOSTON AND MAINE RAILROAD system TIME TABLE No. 4, for employees only, effective 2.00 AM, Saturday, January 4, 1964. This somewhat larger than standard-sized B&M ETT measures 23.9 by 27.5 cm and contains 44 pages, plus the wraps. The inside front cover is an EXPLANATION OF SYMBOLS and a SPEED TABLE. Schedule listings fill pages 1 thru 14 as you can ascertain by the excellent index on the front cover. CHANGES IN RULES FOR THE GOVERNMENT OF THE OPERATING DEPARTMENT are brief, and then GENERAL SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS are on pages 15-17. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS BOSTON DIVISION on pages 17-32. Then SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FITCHBURG DIVISION on pages 32-43 followed by LOCOMOTIVE RESTRICTIONS AND MAXIMUM CAR WEIGHTS. Yes, I know all the foregoing shows in the scan below, but I'm not sure you are able to read it. Page 44 is the very adequate, but plain, system map that shows where CTC is located, single or double track and dark territory. The inside rear cover is a partial 1963-64 calendar. The rear cover has a LIST OF RAILROAD SURGEONS and a 7 POINT SAFETY PROGRAM. And BOSTON AND MAINE RAILROAD system TIME TABLE No. 5, for employees only, effective 2.00 AM, Tuesday, January 7, 1964. This somewhat larger than standard-sized B&M ETT measures 23.7 by 27.8 cm and contains 52 pages, plus the wraps. Why was No.4 only in service for 3 days? And why does No.5 have 8 more pages? It was, as I recall, an experiment in MBTA territory to increase the number of trains to see if that would stem the continued erosion of patronage. And, again as I recall, it worked, but not well enough to continue the experiment. Other than the psgr train listings in and out of Boston, I think you'll find these timetables contain the same basic information and instructions. The B&M as t'was 56 years ago as we begin the year when Alden hired out. Of the 26 Fitchburg Division officials and train dispatchers listed on page 43 of No.4, all are deceased. This writer is the only living person who worked full time in the Miles Street headquarters. Get your memories now. These time tables are in excellent, museum-quality condition. No.5 has the spine protected with Scotch No.845 Book Tape and the receipt card is still attached inside. Your satisfaction guaranteed. Please see my other eBay auctions for more rare and scarce railroad paper. I provide personal service while trying to keep things simple. Please check my feedback and DSR's. Everything I sell is POSTPAID USA, so the winning bid is what you pay, plus eBay’s state tax if applicable, unless you want special services. I normally ship first day after auction ends IF eBay provides a packing slip. Thank you for reading. Alden Dreyer, 91 Reynolds Road, Shelburne MA 01370-9649. Copyright by AHD May 2024.
