"Geological Map of England, Wales and Part of Scotland Showing Also the Inland Navigation by means of River and Canals, with their Elevation in Feet above the Sea, together with the Rail Roads & Principal Roads. By J&C Walker, No. 9 Castle Street, Holborn, London."
The map is dated below the title "Dec. 15th, 1838." The section at the bottom is dated 1837.

This is a magnificent, early Geological Map, handcoloured, mounted on linen. What is more, it comes with its original slipcase, a very scarce item.

The map extends into Scotland above Edinburgh, and has two sections. One, at the top "from St George's Channel to the German Ocean", and the other "Geological and Mineralogical Section from Lands End to the German Ocean" at the bottom. There is also an Explanation of the Colouring, and a small note bottom left by Mr Frederick Burr titled "Metalliferous Tracts of England and Wales."

The map was published at a time when the Industrial Revolution, with its need for raw materials like coal etc., was demanding an increase in Geological knowledge. The map also displays the important transport routes, by rail, road and canal.

Size: the map unfolded measures approx. 145cms x 100cms. The slipcase measures approx. 27.5cms x 18cms.
Condition: The map is in a good condition. Slipcase with an old label on the back dated 5/11/17, and with a little wear, but overall also in a good condition. Please study my photographs.
