Denman, Thomas:
An Introduction to the Practice of Midwifery London, 1805, 1-400, 1-532 index in both volumes COMPLETE. 8 1/2  by 5 1/2 inches. Boards worn.  Boards on volume 1 reattached at some point.

Thomas D. Denman (1733-1815) was an obstetrician, established a private maternity and teaching institution. He later became an obstetrician at Middelsex Hospital. He discovered the transmissibility of puerperal fever through doctors and midwives. Also, his name and his observations are still mentioned when it comes to self-development and the initiation of artificial premature birth. "Denman was one of the first to resort to premature delivery for women with contracted pelvis and gave an early account of membranous dysmenorrhea. He fully endorsed conservative treatment for eclampsia and was opposed to those who favored forced delivery." (Eimas)
