The Luckenbooth Brooch.

Vintage sterling silver brooch by John Hart of Iona, famous mid century Scottish silversmith.

The design is based upon the Luckenbooth brooches sold on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh.  So called because the were sold from Luckenbooths, the locked booths on the street.  Bought by lovers as a betrothal token, and pinned to the shawls of babies to ward off evil spirits, and considered a good luck charm.  The two hearts are said to commemorate the Scottish Queen, Mary Queen of Scots and her husband Lord Darnley.

A shaped cut out design it measures about 35 x 35 mm, 1 5/16" x 1 5/16".

Full Edinburgh hallmarks, dated 1964 with the JH mark.

In very good vintage used condition.

A lovely piece.
