Up for sale is a c 1840 W. & S. Hill London Surveyors Compass.  It has a beautiful and intricately engraved silvered dial that measure  5 1/2" in diameter and is appropriately marked by the maker "W. & S. Jones 30 Holborn London.".   The company first started in 1791 and traded at this address from 1800 - 1859.   Original custom box with a working lock and key along with some kind of key/pin that is attached to the underside of the compass.  Folding sight vanes and an underside level.  Compass is made of solid brass the measures 9" across.

Excellent condition with patination to the brass as expected.   There is a little solder mark on the edge on the rim but I have no clue if that is original.  You can make it out if you look right at 4 o'clock.    The glue on the left wooden mount in the box that holds the compass has dried up so so that piece does have to re glued.  There is a very old white paper label on the top as well as what looks like an original label that is right in the middle of the box lid.  It is a little hard to read but the second word is "compass" and the last two letters of the first word is "NC".

Looks like it was well cared for and the levels are working correctly after 175 +  years!

I am selling a few antique surveyors compass this week so check my other listings.
