This is my 1974 Fender Pro Reverb 212 Combo. It was originally bought for a teenage son and he used it for a while then left it at his parent’s house for over 40 years! The pictures show that, apart from the (now faded) ‘Vive Rock’ statement on the grill cloth, it’s an extremely well preserved example which is why I bought it.

I recently had it serviced – all smoothing capacitors, various valves and the opto-compressor for the tremolo. Everything works exactly as it should. The technician also fixed the voltage to 240 as he said so many units were damaged by this control being accidentally moved. It can be returned to selectable voltage by relocating a single wire. A photo of the receipt for all this work is included.

The amp is non-master volume with valve rectification and is extremely original. The sound is simply wonderful – Fender tube rectified clean with gorgeous reverb and tremolo. The original footswitch is included and works. These models are now gaining in value as they have a sweeter sound than a Twin with the valve rectifier ‘sag’ and simplicity of non master volume architecture. Most guitarists find the 100 watt Twin output too much, this amp delivers 45 watts through original RCA power valves and can attain the ‘sweet spot’ at sensible volumes. Although it will distort at extreme volumes I use a Mesa Pocket Rocket (valve) drive pedal for distortion and the combination is simply wonderful – I’m sure any drive pedal would be equally rewarding with this hand wired Fender. Apparently it is easy to modify these amps to ‘Blackface specs’ but I really like the sound as is.

These amps are becoming rare and sought after and this very clean example will only increase in value. There is now a reissue of this combo but with just a single speaker, the reissue has PCB construction and in many people's opinion cannot compete with the original. The starting price of this auction is well below the price of a new and, arguably, inferior version.
