An ORIGINAL PHILLIPS IMPROVED COMBINATION PLANE CUTTING IRON by Babson & Reppellier, Boston, Massachusetts. This double end cutter has lipped cutting edges on each side. One cuts a 7/16 inch groove and the other 8/16 inch. The cutter retains its original central rod to affix the cutting iron to the plane. This cutter was produced as part of a set for the combination plow plane documented in the August 13, 1867 U.S. Patent of Russell Phillips of Gardiner, Maine.
