An antique Japanese Meiji Era enamel cloisonné vase attributed to Hayashi Kodenji.


The baluster form vase is worked in silver and gold wire depicting a bamboo and cherry trees and a sparrow perched along the branch and other sparrow in the flight on a dark blue background.

-shakudo rim and brass mouth with applied silver rim to the bottom.


Hayashi Kodenji was a pivotal figure in the history of Cloisonne enamel manufacturer. He was instrumental in the formation and leadership of the Shippo cho enamellers guild, and it is probable that he worked for the Nagoya-based Shippo Kaisha. He exhibited and won prizes at many international exhibitions: Nuremberg 1885 Silver, Paris 1889 Silver, and St Louis 1904 Gold.
