No photographer has covered the American dances scenes so thoroughly as Jack Mitchell. Here is a personal selections of his photographs, limited only by the provisions that the subjects are known primarily as performing dancers and that they are American, or have appeared with an American dance company. This handsome volume includes a detailed index identifying subjects with their companies as well as notes on the cameras used, and is an invaluable and inspiring record of American Dance. In the words of Walter Terry, Dance Editor for the New York Herald Tribune: “The special attribute of Jack Mitchell's photography is that his camera's focus and the movement focus of the dancer meet in flawless accord. . . It is a dual portrait he gives us: a portrait of a dancer and, even more important, the portrait of that movement which truly represents the dancer's moment of life within the design of his art.”
