THE LIFE OF NELLIE C. BAILEY;

Or

A Romance Of The West

Written by Mary E. Jackson and published by Donohue & Henneberry, Chicago. Copyright 1885; this book is the second edition after the R. E. Martin, Topeka, Kansas edition and was printed in 1887.

This book has been newly rebound by me in full, carved and colored leather. The designs on the front and rear boards were created by me and inspired by the frontispiece illustration from the first edition and other illustrations included in the book. The book comes with a beautiful clam-shell box designed and completed expressly for this book. It is with lined with brown and red suede leather and with red leather spine label. All design, binding and box work was done by me, Terry Stivers.

I have been designing and carving leather illustrations since the 1970s. I consider myself mostly self-taught, but acknowledge the help and inspiration of many creative and talented persons. My formal education in this area has included various classes in book-binding and book conservation from the Book-Arts Department at the University of Utah.

I have been rebinding and selling rare books for many years and have done many carved leather bindings, but most have gone to friends and relatives until recently. I have numerous emails from purchasers of my rebound and conserved books.

Arthur Boutiette, author of Leather Bound Books (Collector Books, 2006) purchased my carved leather binding, first edition set of Ulysses Grants Memoirs and had this to say, “Terry...I got the books and just wanted to say that I thought you did a terrific job on them......you for sure could do well doing this...when you are ready let me know, I can set you up with some great book dealers...In the meantime please send me your direct email so I can keep it on file...mine is xxxxx...hope to hear from you....thanks....Arthur Boutiette”

The Life of Nellie C. Bailey is about a strange murder case which created a sensation in the Old West, and also gives an account of the hanging of Ben Wheeler and Henry Brown for the robbery of the Medicine Lodge Bank.

From the Arkansas City Republican, November 7, 1885.

Nellie C. Bailey has been in the city this week canvassing for her book. The book, though written in the form of a romance, is by no means a fiction; the material which composes it is mostly based on sworn testimony. The characters are all real. Our reader will remember the trials and tribulations which have besought her. She was arrested for a most heinous crime: that of murdering Clement Bothamley. After being incarcerated for more than a year, she had her trial, being acquitted on June 20, 1885, in the U. S. Court at Wichita. We have not the space to devote to review of the book, but it is an interesting volume. It is truly a Kansas book.”
