ADOLF GALLAND (1912-1996). Luftwaffe ace; general of fighters.  A brilliant and courageous pilot, Galland was born in Westerholt in 1912 and attended school in Poland where he was trained as a pilot.  After a serious crash in 1935 he joined the Luftwaffe.  During the Spanish Civil War, Galland flew 300 missions with the Condor Legion, the Luftwaffe detail assigned to support Franco's forces.  As a fighter pilot in World War II, he served in nearly every theater of operations and was credited with 103 air victories. At the age of 30 Galland become general of fighters and received the coveted award of Knight's Cross with Oakleaves, Swoards, and Diamonds.

Less than two weeks before the war ended, Galland was shot down by and American P-51 pilot.  He survived the crash.  Galland later blamed the defeat of the Germans in the Battle of Britain on Goering's failure to destroy the British radar stations and to concentrate on the tactical destruction of the Royal Air Force instead of engaging in massive strategic night bombings.  (From Leaders and personalities of the Third Reich" by Charles Hamilton).
