TAX STAMP. There is a hand canceled, orange, 2 cent, George Washington U.S. Inter. Rev. Proprietary tax stamp on the back. These tax stamps were affixed to photographs from 1864 – 1866 to support the Union effort.

 

SIZE. Approximately 3 15/16 x 2 3/8 inches.

 

CONDITION. Photo: Some soiling. Mount: Wear at corners. Soiling on front and back.

 

APPEARANCE. Very good tones. Excellent depth of field. Nice composition.


THE FORT. "Fort Gregg (1863-1865) - A Confederate U.S. Civil War earthworks fort established in 1863 on Morris Island in Charleston Harbor, Charleston County, South Carolina. Captured by Union forces in September 1863 and renamed Fort Putnam after Colonel Halderman S. Putnam, who died in the assault on Fort Wagner. Abandoned at the end of the war in 1865."
