RARE Pansy September 1895 magazine Isabella Macdonald Alden prolific writer.
To start this, this little magazine (about 30 pages) was published in 1895-- well over 100 years ago.  The author wrote books and there are a few of them around.  The magazines were generally not preserved by the readers and, in my view, are more valuable.  The pages are fragile. Seems to be stapled together.

Isabella was given the nickname Pansy after picking pansies (roots and all) for a tea party.  Luckily she was young and the dirty table was cleaned before the guests arrived.  She wrote hundreds of books, short stories, and articles.

Pansy wrote many of the articles in the weekly magazine.  Other writers include Alice Parker Beale; Margaret Sidney; E. B. Bucktrout; L.H.M. Palmer; Elizabeth Abbott; and G.R. Alden.  All family members. Published by Lothrop Publishing Company, 92 Pearl Street, Boston, Mass.

Evidently, the magazine was to help you improve your life.  Although it is Christan in focus, it works on all levels.  They ask you to identify your greatness and work on it.

The stories were set out in serial form. Clearly you didn't want to miss them, so you subscribed for $1.00 a year.  Pansy work Reuben's Hindrances, with two drawings.  Alice Parker Beale wrote Caleb, the Son of Edward, with a small drawing. Of note is the article "Haws and Falcons" by L.H.M. Palmer, with a full page drawing of red-Tailed Hawks.  This was a family magazine, including "Baby's Corner," with Bobbykins receiving a new doll.  G,R, Alden wrote a poem called "A shipwreck," which is about Captain Fluffet.  Includes a drawing of Captain Fluffet.

The magazine has a number of drawings: I've seen just the drawings going for good amounts.  I don't know who did the wookcut illustrations, but they are very well done. For example, There is a full page ad for Pears' Soap featuring three kids who are, indeed, in need of soap.

The ads are fun.  Columbia bicycles sold for $100, which seems expensive for 1895.  The "most popular cameras" sold for $8.00, $10.00, and $15.00 from the Boston Camera Company.  The back cover ads are for Ferris' Good Sense Corset Waists; Cocoas and Chocolates from Walter Baker & Company, Thayer's Nutritive if you are tired out, and Ivory Soap: It Floats.

A note about shipping. It would only cost a few dollars to put this in an envelope and mail, but I think we would be happier if we had tracking, which costs more.
