Henry Morton Stanley led an expedition to relieve Emin Pasha, the Egyptian Governor of  Equatoria Province, threatened by Mahdist Forces after the fall of Khartoum. There were political and commercial motives also 'driving' the expedition. The expedition crossed Central Africa from the West Coast moving through often hostile and poorly chartered territory 1887 to 1889. Part way Stanley decided to split the expedition due to insufficient supplies and to allow faster progress. This "Rear Column" was commanded by Captain Barttelot. James Sligo Jameson, Naturalist to the expedition, was with the Rear Column and along with most other European members died. He left a record which was edited by his wife and published. There was subsequent controversy about what happened during the expedition.  Handling wear, scuffing and soiling to original green cloth boards, corners slightly bumped with slight loss of cloth.
