Mel's theological thinking was shaped by his belief in "Providentz" – that is, God's providence in this worldly life. In this view, Mel combined the topos of the active reference to the world (providentia) with divine care (procuratio).  This theological view determined Mel's thinking in various areas and can be found in almost all of his writings. Through his numerous contacts with representatives of Pietism and his Calvinist upbringing, Mel combined the Reformed doctrine of predestination with the pietistic belief in God's guidance in his theological thinking. Based on faith in God's providence and guided by the conviction that the highest destiny of the believer was the promotion of the well-being of one's neighbour and the reverence of God, it was the duty of man to put his faith into practice in everyday life, i.e. through charitable and diaconal activities.
