Here is the glassblowers version of the glass witches ball.

Back in the early days of glass blowing, a glass blower would put the beautiful creations from the sweat, passion and toil of his day into the annealing oven to cool. However, in the morning when he came to check on his precious creations, it was discovered that the controllers on the annealing oven had gone "whacko" in the middle of the night, thus turning his beloved art into a puddle of color.

It was rumored that mischievous "witches" came out at night and wreaked havoc in the glass blowing studio. Thus the birth of the "witches ball". The "witches ball" is to a glass blower, somewhat, what "scarecrows" are to the farmer. Folklore has it that the exasperated artist would hang these balls over his annealing oven to catch these naughty "witches" in the middle of their fun.
