What Is Cod Liver Oil?

Cod liver oil is a nutrient-dense source of essential vitamins including vitamin D and vitamin A as well as anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids. Considering most people don’t eat enough anti-inflammatory foods that provide both vitamin D and omega-3s important nutrients that play a crucial role in cardiovascular, hormonal, immune, reproductive and neurological health many adults and children can benefit from regularly supplementing with cod liver oil. Cod liver oil comes from, you guessed it, cod liver! You can consume the oil either from eating fresh cod liver or, more likely, from taking over-the-counter supplements. Each teaspoon of cod liver oil has about 41 calories and 4.5 grams of fat according to the USDA, split between monounsaturated, saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. The most beneficial aspect of taking cod liver oil is that it contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, the same type found in oily fish or seafood like salmon, mackerel and sardines. It’s also one of the few and best vitamin D–rich foods. Omega-3s and vitamin D are known for lowering inflammation, helping blood clotting, preserving brain health and helping depression. They’re even capable of causing noticeably reduced levels of pain and swelling due to inflammatory conditions like arthritis.

History of Cod Liver Oil:

The origins of cod liver oil can be traced back to the Viking Era when the oil was used as both a food product and medicine. Back then, the oil was extracted from fresh fish, and it was an integral addition to the Norse diet. The Vikings stocked almost all their cod liver oil during the winter. The days were naturally shorter, which meant there was little sunlight. Furthermore, winter was the most important season for fishing. The cod livers remained fresh, which made it easy for the Norse people to extract quality cod liver oil. The Vikings in Northern Norway used a common technique for extracting cod liver oil – they poured water into a large kettle or pan, boiled it, and placed a couple of birch-tree branches on top of a pan or kettle. Next, they placed the liver atop the birch branches as the steam came out of the pan. The liver secreted oil, which dropped into the water. Once there was a large enough quantity, they skimmed the brown-colored oil, placed more livers on the branches, and repeated the process (although there was no taste or odor of the oil after it was processed in this manner). Moreover, the Vikings also used to eat the liver after dipping it in the oil.

Relieves Muscle Aches and Pains:

Often, vitamin D deficiency leads to bone and muscle pain. Cod liver oil is a rich source of this vitamin and ensures a strong and firm bone structure. Many studies state that regular consumption of cod liver oil increases vitamin D levels in the body, thereby improving muscle strength and reducing muscle pain significantly. Vitamin D deficiency from childhood can lead to serious issues like rickets or malformed bone structures, and this deficiency in adolescents often leads to retarded growth, muscular pain and a feeling of physical weakness. In such cases, regular doses of cod liver oil can successfully ease this problem.

Cod Liver Oil and Heart Health:

Cod liver oil products are rich in the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). While fatty fish consumption in the diet is associated with a decreased risk of heart problems, studies examining the effects of EPA and DHA supplements such as cod liver oil have shown benefit. A research article published in October 2012 in "Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes" pooled the results from 20 studies involving more than 60,000 people. The authors found that people with higher omega-3 fatty acid consumption through diet or supplements had a decreased risk of dying from a heart complications. The American Heart Association recommends 1 g of EPA plus DHA daily for people with heart problems, and higher amounts for those with elevated blood triglycerides. Food is the best source of omega-3 fatty acids but supplements may be helpful.

Benefits of Cod Liver Oil, and Desiccated Liver:

cod liver oil are nutrient-packed super-food supplements that can help boost energy, libido, muscle growth, brain power, and general health. They are abundant sources of nutrients difficult to obtain elsewhere, such as vitamin A, arachidonic acid, DHA, and the B vitamins. The National Institutes of Health reports that current scientific thinking is that fish oils may lower your cholesterol by keeping it from being absorbed in the intestine, with further evidence that using vitamin B12 along with fish oils might increase their ability to lower cholesterol levels. According to the “Medscape Journal,” fish oil’s protective benefits in reducing blood-fat lipid triglycerides and increasing HDL, or "good cholesterol," is also due to the effects of omega-3 fatty acids in the oil.

Cod Liver Oil & Hair Growth:

Cod liver oil has been used for hundreds of years for a number of ailments and preventative measures. While cod liver oil has not been specifically tested for its effectiveness as a hair growth agent, it does have several properties that may help with your hair growth. You should speak with your physician before beginning to take cod liver oil. Vitamin D plays an important role in normal hair growth and may help with hair loss. Dr. Yann F. Mahe has conducted studies on hair loss and concluded that a high percentage of those suffering from pattern baldness have signs of inflammation. In a paper that appeared in the August 2000 issue of the "International Journal of Dermatology," Mahe states there is a significant amount of inflammation in at least 37 percent of those with pattern baldness. The University of Maryland Medical Center also recommends omega-3 fatty acids, such as those found in cod liver oil, as a supplement for those suffering from hair loss problems.

Improves Brain Functions:

The two substances in cod liver oil, DHA and EPA, are believed to have important role in brain functions. DHA has a significant part to play in brain cell membranes and improves their fluidity. So, messages pass from one cell to the other in brain easily.EPA improves communication by improving cell signaling.

Cod Liver Oil Benefits for Your Skin:

Oil obtained from the liver of the codfish contains large amounts of Vitamin A, D and omega-3 fatty acids. It is used as a dietary supplement and can be found at most major pharmacies in the vitamin/supplement section. Cod liver oil helps to improve certain diseases of the skin, rashes or lesions. It can also help to improve dry skin and improve the look of skin. The vitamin A and B levels found in traditionally processed fermented cod liver oil help heal troubled skin from the inside out, while its high levels of omega-3 fatty acids keep the outer layers of skin strong, creating a barrier against environmental toxins. Since your skin is so porous, this is crucial not only for your skin’s health, but also for the rest of your body.

Cod Liver Oil for Dogs:

What are the benefits of cod liver oil for dogs?  Your pet deserves a healthy and nutritious diet to support growth and vitality. In the past, the canine diet consisted of a variety of natural, unprocessed foods.  Unfortunately, with the convenience of processed pet foods, we may not be giving our favorite companions all the nutrients they need for optimal health. One of the items high the list of missing nutrients may be omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3’s are special fats that help support a healthy cellular environment and have been found to fight inflammation. Your dog’s food may contain adequate levels of omega-6 fats from vegetable oils, but are you giving enough omega 3’s for your dog? If not, you may need to need to supplement with a high quality omega 3 supplement, such as cod liver oil. Research has shown humans should strive for a ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 of 1:1 in their diets.  On the other hand, veterinarians recommend a ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 of 5:1 to 10:1 in dogs. Cod liver oil contains the essential fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These nutritious fats provide the framework for growing a healthy skin and coat, flexible joints, strong heart, sharp eyesight and youthful energy. Giving fish oils to dogs may address any possible nutritional imbalances in your pet’s diet and could help improve your dog’s overall health.
