Early Edition of John Ingram's EDGAR ALLAN POE: His Life, Letters, and Opinions
Poe's English biographer, John Ingram, wrote the arguably first biography of Edgar Allan Poe, which was published in London in 1880. He undertook the project to restore Poe's damaged reputation caused by Rufus Griswold's notorious "Ludwig" obituary. This edition was published in Glasgow, Scotland, by The Grand Colosseum Warehouse Co. It has no date, but (if you can make out the small print on the title page) the notation reads "Founded by Mr. Walter Wilson in 1869." Note the footnote on the pic of page 1 which references Didier's bio, which had a publication date of 1879. There is some controversy over which actually appeared first, Ingram's or Didier's, but this edition was probably published in the 1890s when the works and biographies of other famous 19th century authors were published by Wilson's Grand Colosseum Co.

The book measures 5 x 7 1/2, 490 pages, gray cloth. The spine is sunned, with some external wear (see pics), but internally it is in good, tight condition, with no markings or defects. This is a very collectible and difficult-to-find edition of Poe's earliest book-length biography.
