For your consideration is a gorgeous oil on canvas board by a mystery artist. It is not entirely uncommon for an artist to reuse a canvas, thus painting over their existing artwork. Here; however, the artist painted over just their signature. This is the first piece I have owned where an artist has done this. Sure, it’s possible someone else painted over the artist’s signature; however, the brush work and paint color match the artwork perfectly. I have done little research on the issue and artist, and leave it up to the buyer to do so if they’re so inclined.

The verso contains a note, which states:

“October 3, 1962

To my friend Bessie Anderson from Anna T. Reagan 1962.”

Given the inscription on verso, one could assume this artwork is from 1962; however, the artwork looks much older, is housed in a period frame from the 1930s/40s, and an art director from the auction house where I purchased this piece in Connecticut, estimates 1930s as the date of creation for this piece.

It appears Anna T. Reagan owned the artwork at some time, and then Bessie Anderson owned it as a gift from Anna.

I purchased this artwork at auction in Connecticut. He auction house noted the following on the item tag: “From the Hill School”. I believe they’re referring to Anna Althea Hills (January 28, 1882 – June 13, 1930) —the noted impressionist painter who captured plein air landscapes of Southern California and spent time painting the Mission San Juan, amongst other notable landmarks.

Subject is a view of the interior garden of the Mission San Juan Bautista in San Juan Capistrano, California. We see a section of an archway, covered in brick and adobe/plaster. Stone flooring surrounds the archway and continues farther into the artwork, drawing the eye with it. Flowering bushes, perhaps roses, and a beautiful full grown tree, maybe a California Pepper, are found amongst the lush, verdant landscaping of the Mission. Also found is a statue of Junipero Serra, an important Franciscan missionary. In the distance, we see tall trees and large hills; the Mission is located in a large valley in Orange County.

Artwork measures approximately 9.5 x 14”. It is in good shape with no conditions to note.

The artwork is housed in a gorgeous bronze colored wooden frame. The frame is likely original to the piece. It suits it wonderfully. The frame is in great shape given age, and has no serious conditions to note. However, please know that because this is basically an antique piece, there will be minor age related wear such as the odd dent, scratch, nick, etc.

Artwork + frame measures approximately 13 x 17”.

SHIPPING PLEASE NOTE: Due to the unique nature and size of each artwork, I am unable to ship next day. I source boxes to fit the artwork, or I create them myself. Dependent upon size and fragility, I may need to build a cage to house your new piece. A lot goes into making sure your artwork makes it to you in one piece. Properly packing art takes time. These are one of a kind works of art. They cannot be replaced. Please give me the time they deserve to pack them properly.
