Green Feather Shell Edged Pearlware

Miniature Platter

Davenport Staffordshire c 1825

This is a fine miniature pearlware toy platter or meat plate, made as part of a complete childs doll size dinner service. The tiny plate measures just 4 inches in diameter with a ruggedly scalloped hand cut rim embellished with emerald green shell edge or distinct feather edge and an early rounded rimless bottom, finished with a pearlware glaze.

The plate was made by Davenport, and marked as such, in the Staffordshire region of England in the early 19th century. Feather edged and shell edged ironstone and earthenwares commonly in blue and in green were the most common English household wares found in homesites in colonial America. These tiny sizes are rarely found. Judging by its size, it is a well preserved example from an impeccably potted miniature dinner service set.

The plate is in great condition for its age. An old fleabite on the back rim, stilt marks, insignificant underglaze grit, as shown and original to the making, and no other chips cracks or repairs.  Perfect as is, though could use a little cleaning considering the age and probable use as childrens toys. Offered as is, a great example of a very rare early motif, a fine style and lovely sentimental gift for a favorite child.

A pocket size work of art.
