Architectural Digest Magazine APRIL 2007 HELEN MIRREN & TAYLOR HACKFORD
Look Inside Helen Mirren and Taylor Hackford's New Orleans Bungalow
The actress and director's former house in the French Quarter, which they acquired after spending time in Baton Rouge, opened off a courtyard
"New Orleans is our escape from Los Angeles and the film industry," observed director Taylor Hackford. The couple's former house in the French Quarter, which they acquired after spending time in Baton Rouge, opened off a courtyard. "I find New Orleans very peaceful," said Mirren. "One end of Bourbon Street is—what can I say?—Bourbon Street, but most of it is wonderful houses." The first time Taylor brought me to New Orleans," says British actress Helen Mirren, "all I could say was, I'm going to die here.' Like Venice. And that same decadent, romantic, slow sweetness comes over me every time I return. It's one of the few places that's not precious to the nth degree; it doesn't look as though its history has been cleaned up by Disney. It's funky and untidy. It's my contact with Europe in America."
