Circa 1960 James Special 197cc 4-speed Trials bike.
Here is an
interesting little James Trials rep / special 197cc Villers powered trials bike. Built up a long
while ago and has been standing for along while. I simply rinsed the tank out
with fresh fuel, fitted new petrol tap, cleaned points and away she goes! Easy
to start, sweet sounding strong Villiers engine with 4-speed box.
Very lively
little bike to ride, all good gears, decent brakes especially rear. Clutch may
need a bit of attention, probably just clean and re-adjust to prevent a bit of
slip.
Speedo of
the Smith’s D shape type is fitted but not working. There is no drive cable but
the drive box on the rear wheel is clearly working OK.
There are no
docs with the bike.
There is no
frame number apparent, probably due to the frame strengthening plates that have
been welded onto the headstock, There has also been a strutt welded in under
the cross bar to the front tank mounting point for added strength. I am reliably informed it is not a James frame most possibly SUN or another generic Villiers accepting frame of the period. However the bike is badged as a James and the engine is from a James, so probably best described as a James Trials rep or special.

Cosmetically
the bike is in generally scruffy old bike condition.
The paint
work on the frame is all old and a bit rough looking.
Tank is OK
but it had quite a bit of residue from old fuel in it. I have rinsed it out
reasonably well but I would suggest a more thorough clean out with some strong
chemicals would do the trick.
Wheels are a
bit scruffy, old silver paint, sound spokes, very old trials tyres.
Exhaust
system looks good.
All in all
this is a good basis for either a nice lightweight trials bike of possible
trail type bike.
Selling as a
good runner in need of good service and check over before returning to serious
use.
