This ‘P’tit Poulbot’ hand cross stitched vintage tapestry is based on an illustration made by Francisque Poulbot b 1879 in Paris, known for his images of street children. Original Poulbot of boy with cap is based on the character Gavroche in Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables. As these images became popular in the 1960s and 1970s as kitsch ornaments, the Poulbot family extended to include more characters. This is a girl with dog – set at Place du Tertre with the famous Sacré Coeur church in the background, in Montmartre – a ‘quartier’ steeped in history and most recently depicted in the film Amélie, where most of the action was set.
