British War Medal, named: COMMR. E.C.STUBBS. R.N.

Edward Carleton (Carleton some sources) Stubbs was born in 1881 and entered the Royal Navy in 1895 as a Cadet aged 14, making Lieutenant in 1903 and Commander in 1916. Edward is on the retired list in 1924 before entering service again as a Captain in 1939.

There is a massive amount of written information on the service records, which I would struggle to relay here. However Edward's WW2 service is also very interesting and covered well on the internet. This includes commanding the Tuscarora in 1940 as part of the 84th Anti-Submarine Group, commanding the armed yacht HMS Surprise on 'Winston Specials' convoys in 1941 and at the age of 62 (my maths?) Captain on HMS Fermoor, a Boom ship in the Mulberry Harbour Mooring Force at Arromanches. It is staggering to think that Edward had gone from a 14 year old Cadet in 1895 on wooden ships under sail, to a veteran Captain taking part in the biggest invasion the world had ever seen.

Edward's life and service need further research. The medal is disc only and is sold with printed research, including the service records, however there is a lot of written text, so you may find it easier to download, I can help with how to do that. The is a very interesting medal offering a unique story to be researched especially with the D-Day involvement.
