HTF Set of 7 Antique Laughlin Old Roman Yellow 8" Luncheon Plates w/ Hibiscus Flowers and Green Line - PEAK ART DECO
Hard to Find Antique Old Roman set of seven 8" dinner plates with a beautiful Hibiscus Flowers Decal in the beautiful pale yellow antique glaze.
Old
Roman was developed in 1928 and was made primarily in the green and a
light yellow glazes commonly used in the Depression era. In the article
"Old Roman Dinnerware" by Jeff Kolodey appearing in The Dish Vol. 13,
No. 2, a patent date of an Old Roman plate is revealed as March 5, 1929.
The
flatware is very similar to the Newell shape except it has added
embossing along the rim. Teacup, sugar and creamer were specially
created for Old Roman. The square plate comes from the Wells shape. It
was given the heavy decorative embossing, but not the familiar rope edge
that originated with the Newell shape.
Pieces
are marked one of three ways: a simple Old Roman backstamp, a Design
Patent number 77912, and the Wells Art Glazes mark. Originally made for
Quaker Oats, it wasn't a very extensive line and is one of the more
challenging HLC shapes to collect. No larger pieces such as sauceboat,
teapot, or casserole have been found and may not exist. Decaled yellow
square plates are some of the easier pieces to find.

Condition: Good to very good antique condition. No cracks. No chips on two of the plates. The other five plates have at least one small underside chip. One plate has a chip on the front side. Some under the glaze crazing on the plates, common with antique pottery. Glaze and decal are shiny
and bright on all of the plates. Green lines have some fading and wear on some of the plates. Plates may have other small common factory production imperfections such as glaze skips, sand bumps, glaze pops, and glaze unevenness - all typical with antique pottery making in the factory. Little issues with these plates. Very cool antique plates - see all pictures.
NOTE: We have one other set of these plates that are in excellent condition if you are looking for more! Get them while you can (if they are still available in the store)!
