This lovely set of Antique Moss Rose is a Coffee Set.
It includes the Coffee Pot, the Sugar Bow, a Serving Tray, Luncheon Plate, Cup and Saucer.
The Coffee Pot, which of course could be used as a Teapot, is approx. 9 inches high and has a lid. At the base of the spout are holes that acted as a filter for the coffee.
The lid had a nick on the part of porcelain that keeps the lid in place while pouring.
The Sugar Bowl has a lid and two handles and measures approx. 7 inches tall.
The Serving Tray has two cut out handles and measures approx. 10 inches wide.
The Luncheon Plate is approx. 7-1/4 inches wide.
The Saucer is approx. 5-1/2 inches wide. The Cup measures approx. 2-3/4 inches high.
The Cup has a manufacturing defect, but it was painted over with gold.
These pieces date from 1820 to 1860. Very old pieces and in good condition. All pieces have a nice ping when tapped.
During this time many blanks were produced and offered to the amateur decorator, however the
decorations on these pieces are of skilled quality. The gold is so well done on all the pieces.
Prior to 1891 there were no rules about markings, whether maker or retailer. In 1891 the McKinley Tariff Law was introduced and all imported goods were required to be marked with the country of origin. All of these pieces are unmarked.
In Limoges, France there were many makers, in fact by the 1900s there were almost 50 makers in the area.
These are were likely not made for export yet they have been expertly decorated and were likely for the French market.
