“Of an ancient Family thorough Anglo Saxon," named Greenlee, called in 
the Mlidland Counties of England, "The Greenlees," from the researches of 
John Thorpe, Herald of Dudderton Manor, Warwickshire, we learn that two 
Knights of this family, "Harold and Athel Greenlee" of the Green Chase, 
Northumberland, for heroic gallantry in the Norfolk Campaign against the 
Danes, were gifted by King Alfred to a Demesne in the County of Warwick, 
called Balsal Chase, now called Balsal Heath, where this branch lived in opu- 
lence and high respect, up to the time of Queen Elizabeth, when, through Lord 
Wentworth, Minister to that Royal Lady, they were granted estates near the 
City of Limerick, Ireland, thereon to establish an Armory and Fabricque for 
small arms and Culverin Cannon. Here this branch lived in high repute up to 
the time King James was with William, Prince of Orange, when their Hall and 
Works being sacked and burned, they were invited to the protection of the 
Marquis of Devonshire. But thereafter, being greatly reduced in fortune, 
James Greenlee and family embarked to the port of Waterford, Ireland, with 
intention to settle within a township called "Kenuet Pennsylvania," but must 
have been diverted from that province to the neighborhood of a place called 
"Marlboro Port, Maryland" as letters bearing that Post House mark were 
directed thence to Sir John Lanier, of Portsbello, Ireland, concerning the pur- 
chase of estate for said Lanier's family, by James Greenlee; also letters from 
same Post House to Lord Lumley, of Lumley Castle, Durham County, England 
(old friends of the Greenlee family), which letters were preserved in the 
archives of Aston, Lee Manor Hall, Warwickshire, where they were found in 
the year 1830 by John Thorpe, Yeoman, of Duddeston Manor, said County, 
together with a manuscript history of the Greenlee family, a duplicate inden- 
tured copy of which was found in 1848, in the British Consul General's office, 
Baltimore, and forwarded by Anthony Barclay, of the British Consulate, 
Barclay St., New York, to James Watt, Lord of the Manor, of Aston on Lee, 
Warwickshire. Which James Watt was related, on the maternal side, to the 
Irish Branch of the Warwick County Greenlees, supposed to be settled in the 
neighborhood of a place called Marlboro Royalty of Maryland, the letters hav- 
ing been posted there.”
