Why AWUS036NHR instead of an 802.11n product off the store shelf? FAQ- some common questions about Alfa AWUS036NHR 2000mW USB adapter w/ 5 dBi antenna kit: Will this work better than my 1000mW B/G long range adapter from Alfa? -AWUS036NHR has much better receive sensitivity for both G and N networks vs. its predecessor AWUS036NH. Alfa's 1000mW G model (AWUS036H) may still get the best overall range to an 802.11g access point, as may other 1000mW G devices based on Realtek's special RTL8187L chipset. Those devices will have slower speeds though. To take advantage of the faster speeds of the 802.11n standard, while getting excellent range to 802.11n routers and very good range to 802.11g routers, we recommend AWUS036NHR. If you just want long range to an 802.11g AP and have no interest in N compatibility, check out Alfa's AWUS036H or other 1000mW 802.11g options we sell. Why would this adapter work better than a generic 2000mW USB adapter, since they both have the same output power? -2000mW refers to the maximum output power at which the device can operate. The actual range you get will depend on other factors, such as internal chipset and receive sensitivity. For example, if you view the video at the top of this page, you will notice that this model outperforms Alfa's older model AWUS036NH. But both have 2000mW of max output power.. How far away can I pick up signals with this? -For this question there is no exact answer. Wireless range is an imperfect science. The range you get with any adapter will vary markedly depending on the strength and quality of the wireless access point being used, as well as obstacles and interference in the area. Keep in mind that interference can often be invisible. The Alfa is the longest range and most powerful standalone wireless adapter on the market at the time of this writing. Basically, if this kit does not work for you, you will likely need to look into some sort of high gain outdoor setup. At Rokland, our products are guaranteed to work for 30 days. Additionally, we want customers to be able to return products that they don't want, don't like, or did not mean to buy.
