THIS IS THE ENGLISH VERSION (SEE FOURTH PICTURE) BUT THERE WERE 1,000 ISSUED IN GERMAN LANGUAGE EDITION. THE BEAR WEARS A WHITE EAR TAG WITH A GOLD PLATED "BUTTON IN EAR". In 1902, Richard Steiff, a nephew of Margarete Steiff, designed the first jointed bear made of mohair plush and presented it to the public in 1903 at the occasion of the spring-fair in Leipzig. At the end of the fair, an American buyer passed by and asked Richard Steiff what the fair-novelty from Steiff would be like. Richard immediately took his Bear LB 55 and showed it to him. That same day, the American buyer placed an order for 3,000 Steiff Bears, whcih was meant to be the start into a successful world trade. In 1907 only, more than 974,000 Teddy-bears had been produced at Steiff, which were marked with the "Button in Ear" and sent out all over the world. |
