Welcome to Antiques & Moore!

This listing is for a wonderful 19th Century antique French bronze repousse tazza or compote signed G. Faraoni "The Lion Slayer", c. 1869.

Raised center design in high relief with nude horseman with spear, an axe man on foot and a prostrate wounded lion in a desert scene. Possibly a pyramid on upper left. Signed "L. OUDRY pre Editeur" and "G. Faraoni '69" in bronze below center design.

Has gorgeous repousse decorated pedestal and scalloped base. Underneath the top tray section is a circle of deep rounded panels.  This is an exceptional 19th Century French bronze tazza!

Editeur Leopold Oudry owned a foundry in Paris in the 1860's and hired artists to produce works of Repousse which by electrotyping, he would produce exact replicas. He patented this process in the mid-1800s. Most works were done in bronze and were lead filled so they have a nice, heavy weight.

This stunning compote has nice details and beautiful original patina. It is in excellent condition with no noted damage or repairs.

Measures 7" high with the top being 7 1/2" in diameter and 4 1/4" wide at base.  Weighs 4.4 pounds.

History:

G. (Gastan) Faraoni featured this sculpture as a wall plaque in the Paris Exhibition of 1867 and received the prize given for the finest work in a competition of Paris workman. He also won many other awards and medals for his sculptures and was a well known French sculpture of this period.
