PISA possesses many buildings celebrated for their splendor; and among these the Cathedral or Duomo is preeminent . lmmense in size, and built exclusively of marble, it bears testimony to what was the grandeur of this city at a time when the glories of Venice and Genoa were yet in the bud. It was built in the eleventh century, in the Grecian style and by Greek architects, in the form of a cross, of which the greatest length is four hundred feet, thetransverse measurement two hundred and sixty. The interior is divided into five naves, with thirty-eight columns of porphyry, the largest of which are one hundred and two feet high. The decorations consist in a profusion of admirable specimens of painting and sculpture. The celebrated tower, with its spiral gallery which winds upward to the height of one hundred and fifty feet, is the work of a German architect, William of Innspruck. It is remarkable for its striking deviation from the perpendicular, a peculiarity observable, though in a less degree, in other similar structures of the place, and imputed to the yielding nature of the sandy ground. The Baptisterio, built in the twelfth century, has been pronounced the finest existing specimen of the old Byzantine Gothic style.
